Mousehouse FffThe Mousehouse Fishing Lodge is a three bedroom, one bathroom, one kitchen, one century old, weather board cottage in the middle of the town of Mossburn.

The Mousehouse is available for accommodation by people wishing for bed and breakfast, or for people wishing to cater for themselves. We can cater for travellers, tourists, anglers, and hunters alike.

Mossburn is a middle of nowhere town in the hub of everything
and the centre of everywhere.
On its winding, rambling, up and down, meandering roads, miles don’t count for much. The fishing is sublime.

We are central for exploring the Southland to Otago regions which includes within easy range: Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Te Anau, Manapouri, Fiordland, Milford Sound, Mavora Lakes, Invercargill, Bluff, the Southern Heritage Trail, Gore, The Catlins, the Southern Scenic Route, Riverton, Colac Bay and the South Coast.

For anglers we find ourselves with the Oreti River on our doorstep, while the Mataura, the Aparima, and The Hamilton Burn, are all within easy distance. Slightly further afield are the Whitestone, the Mararoa, the Von, the Greenstone and countless other lakes and rivers to stretch the angler’s technique whether it be dry fly, nymph, lure, spinner, trolling, or sea fishing.
For the hunter the local game species are Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Wapiti, Chamois, Tahr, wild boar as well as smaller game such as hare, rabbits, possum and waterfowl.
A variety of local guides are available for hunting, shooting and fishing.

Mossburn is a farming community, with a population of a few hundred. It is situated in a very scenic area, with the mountainous back-drops of Fiordland to the west, the West Dome looking down upon the town and the Umbrella Mountains forging a back drop to the north. To the south, the White Hill is now fringed with a wind farm.
The wide, gin-clear Oreti River runs the length of the town.
Due to the nature of the local agriculture Mossburn is known as the Red Deer capital of New Zealand while due to the sheer number of trout in the Mataura River, nearby Gore is the Brown Trout capital of the World!
The main street has a truck stop busy with tourists stopping on the only road to the Milford Sound, it has a filling station, a general store, a mechanic workshop, and an agricultural supplies - ideal for clothes, boots, and countrywear.
Bracken Hall is a wonderful café, with an information centre, gift shop and internet access. The Railway Inn is the local bar with meals and accommodation.
For the visitor and locals the town has a fine eighteen-hole golf course and an indoor swimming pool.
The local fishing guide we recommend is David Murray Or
